Owner Rachel Nixon is hoping to go two for two this spring with the recent opening of her new Mexican restaurant in Dubuque.
Lalo’s 2 Mexican Bar & Grill opened last week at 1091 University Ave. The restaurant serves a variety of Mexican cuisine and is opening following the success of the first Lalo’s location operating in Wyoming, Iowa.
“We want people to feel really comfortable and welcomed here,” Nixon said. “That’s something we see in our other location that we want to bring here, too.”
The Wyoming location has been in operation since 2021. Dubuque seemed far enough away to reach a new customer base, Nixon said, while also being close enough for dual management.
The restaurant opened last week, and staff now are settled and ready to serve the broader Dubuque area, Nixon said.
A brunch fundraiser featuring local vendors is set to be held this month.
Steeple Square is hosting Marys & Mimosas: A Sunday Funday Brunchfest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 21.
The event will feature food, live music, drinks, retail vendors and a casual fashion show, according to a news release.
Local vendors include Brazen Open Kitchen + Bar, Knockout Melts, Caroline’s Restaurant at Hotel Julien Dubuque, Park Lane, Dirt Road Darlings Boutique, City Girl Farming and more.
Some people collect baseball cards, vintage cars, or comic books.
Cascade native Bob Neiers may have them all beat with his collection of scotch.
The collection, which began in the early ’90s, now stands at 553 bottles, according to Neiers’ best guess. Most of the bottles are single malt scotch with some bottles of blended
scotch included.
It’s a collection that began in Minnesota and moved several places with Neiers before ending up in Cascade when Neiers and his wife, Lavonne Mohn, moved to town a year ago.
“We never dropped or broke a bottle in all those moves,” Neiers shared.
